Basañez, Luis

Full Professor. Emeritus Professor

Luis Basañez Villaluenga holds a doctorate in industrial engineering and is a professor of systems and automation engineering. Both his research and educational activity has been centered around control theory, robotics and computer vision, fields in which he has lead numerous research projects. His current fields of interest in robotics are sensor fusion, multi-robot systems, teleoperation and task planning. Past positions include director of the Cybernetics Institute (IC), CSIC and of the UPC and vice-principal of the Institute of Industrial and Control Engineering (IOC), UPC.

Luis Basañez Villaluenga currently holds the positions of Spanish representative at the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), secretary of the Spanish Association of Robotics (AER-ATP) and is a member of the Technical Board of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), of which he is Fellow Member, a distinction awarded at Prague's Global Congress, 2005.

Palomo, Leopold

Research Assistant

Palomo, Leopold

Research Assistant

Suárez, Raúl

Research Supervisor

Raúl Suárez was born in Asturias, Spain, in 1959. He is Electronic Engineer (with honors) from the National University of San Juan, Argentina (1984), and Doctor Engineer (with honors) from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Spain (1993). At present, he is Research Supervisor at UPC. His research activities have been mainly focused on the area of robotized assembly, especially in the field of fine motion planning in the presence of uncertainty, and more recently in the field of robotized grasping and manipulation. He has participated in several research projects on these topics. He has obtained, at international events, the Best Paper Award in the IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Task Planning, Pittsburgh, USA, in 1995, the Best Reviewer Award in the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), Seattle, USA, in 2015, the Best Paper Award in the IEEE 20th International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA), Luxembourgh, in 2015, and was finalist for the Best Application Paper Award in the IEEE Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), Madrid, Spain, in 2018; and at national events the Award to the Best Work in Robotics at the XXIV, XXXIV and XXXVIII Jornadas de Automática in 2003, 2013 and 2017 respectively. Dr. Suárez has been Deputy Director of the Institute of Industrial and Control Engineering (IOC) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia from 2003 to 2009, and Director of IOC from 2009 to 2016 (re-elected in 2012). His main research areas include grasping and dexterous manipulation, intelligent robotic systems, multi-robot manipulation and control, skill acquisition, and planning and learning techniques in robotics. Dr. Suárez is the coordinator of the PhD. Program "Automatic Control, Robotics and Computer Vision" at UPC.

Aliakbar Akbari was born in Tehran, Iran. He received the B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Islamic Azad University Parand Branch, Tehran, in 2010. He followed the M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Famagusta, Cyprus, in 2013. Also he had worked with the Computer Vision Center, Bellaterra, Spain as a research technician support (2008-2010). At present, he is a Ph.D. candidate from the program of Automatic Control, Robotics and Computer Vision at the UPC. His current research is in motion planning, task distribution and robots coordination.

At the Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), where he received the System Engineering degree in 2010, in 2012 received the official university degree of Master in Artificial Intelligence from the universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain. At present, he is a Ph.D. candidate from the program of Automatic Control, Robotics and Computer Vision at the UPC. His current research is in motion planning, task distribution and robots coordination.

 

Rojas, Francisco Abiud

Francisco Abiud is Industrial engineer (2004) and master in industrial engineering with support to Manufacturing (2012), they both degrees obtained from Instituto Tecnológico de Orizaba. He was research professor at full time in Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Misantla during 2012. He was assistant at the modification of the packaging line 040 and 060 in Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma (2004) and Supervisor of boarding routes of the Distribution Center in FEMSA in Orizaba, Veracruz (2010). Actually he is PhD student at IOC-UPC and his interesting areas are, grasping and manipulation and the motion planning of complex mechanisms, among others.
